Enrollment Agreement

When students register for the first time at MLC, they must read and sign the MLC Enrollment Agreement below:
(Google Translate available in upper left corner)

Please read the following information carefully and be sure to ask us if you have any questions.

Attendance
All students must maintain a minimum of 80% attendance.  If a student is 5 minutes late for a class, he or she will be counted as late.  If a student leaves more than 5 minutes early, he or she will be marked as early departure.  A total of 4 late arrivals/early departures counts as 1 absence.  Please see the Attendance Policy in the MLC Student Handbook for more details.

Satisfactory Academic Progress
Students must complete coursework and pass exams in order to maintain satisfactory academic progress in the program.  Students must meet the quantitative minimum standard of 80% attendance in the session and maintain a minimum grade of 70% to be in good academic standing.  To advance to the next level, a student must earn 80% in a complete level (Levels 1 and 2 = 2 sessions; Levels 3, 4, 5 = 3 sessions).  Please see the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy in the MLC Student Handbook for more details.

Textbooks
Students must purchase the required textbooks for their classes for each session.  Students must have their books on the first day of class, and they must bring their textbooks to class every day.  The cost of books at a local bookstore ranges from $100 to $175 each period of financial obligation or session.

Maintaining Student Status
An international student admitted to the United States as an F-1 student must meet certain obligations in order to maintain visa status.  Under current regulations, the student must:

a. Have a passport that is kept valid at all times.

b. Attend the school he or she is authorized to attend.

c. Pursue a full course of study and make normal progress towards the completion of the course of study. Full time English study is defined as 20 hours of class per week.  See the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy in the MLC Student Handbook for more details.

Exit Exam and Exit Interview
At the end of your program, you will be required to take an exit exam to measure your English proficiency level.  After the exam, you will meet with Susan Hawley or Ira Fisher for an exit interview.

Payment
The tuition and registration cost of the first session of study in the intensive English program is $1250.00. Students are required to pay all costs by the first day of class. The Michigan Language Center does not accept payment in installments.

Cancellation and Refund Policy (2-17-2017)

CANCELLATION:
A student who never attends classes at the MLC after enrolling and informs the MLC by verbal or written notification prior to the session that he/she will not attend, will receive a refund for the full tuition balance amount that was paid.  The non-refundable application and registration fee of $100.00 will not be refunded.

WITHDRAWAL: INTENSIVE PROGRAM AND SEMI-INTENSIVE CLASSES
A student is eligible for a refund if he/she withdraws from the program by verbal or written notification to the directors and if his/her last date of attendance (LDA) is before the session midpoint (50%) of the program or class. If a student is administratively withdrawn from the program, he or she is eligible for a refund without verbal or written notification.  Refunds are based on the following:

A.  The application and registration fee of $100.00 is always non-refundable.
B.  The pro-rated tuition amount is based on the class weeks for which the student was enrolled from the student's start date to the last date of attendance.  When determining the number of weeks completed by the student, any portion of a week in which a student attends class will be considered as a whole week, provided the student was present at least one day during the scheduled week.

After the midpoint of the period of financial obligation of the session, there will be no refund for that session.

One session is the minimum period of financial obligation. Students who pay for future sessions are eligible for a full refund for all future sessions.

WITHDRAWAL: 3-WEEK ENROLLMENT
Special terms and conditions apply when a student makes arrangements to enroll for 3 weeks.  See Terms and Conditions for 3-Week Enrollment document.

If a student enrolls in his/her first session in the Intensive English Program for a period of 3 weeks and then withdraws, there is no refund.  A student who enrolls in a subsequent session is eligible for a refund if he/she withdraws from the program by verbal or written notification to the directors and if his/her last date of attendance (LDA) is before the session midpoint.  If a student is administratively withdrawn from the program, he/she is eligible for a refund without verbal or written notification.

After the midpoint of the 3-week enrollment period for continuing students, there will be no refunds.

REFUND TIMELINE
Refunds will be paid within 30 calendar days from the documented date of determination.  The date of determination is the date the student gives written or verbal notice of withdrawal from the program to an MLC director or the date the school terminates the student under the terms of the Michigan Language Center's Attendance Policy. The refund is based on the student’s start date and last date of attendance.

AGENCY
If an agency has arranged a student's enrollment and paid the student's tuition, the refund  will be made to the agency.

TERMINATION
Students who are terminated due to violations of the MLC's disciplinary or attendance policies are eligible for refunds as of their last date of attendance if that date falls on or before the session midpoint.
