Special Services For Michigan Language Center Students

 

Airport Pick Up - On request, MLC students are met at the airport and brought to Ann Arbor. There is an $95.00 charge for this service. For more information on Airport Pick Up click here.

Housing - Housing can be arranged for MLC students before they come to Ann Arbor. Comfortable, safe, furnished student apartments are available just a short walk from the MLC. For more information on Housing click here.

Course Placement - The MLC placement test evaluates each skill separately. As a result, a student may have a multi-level placement.

Orientation - Before classes begin, students attend an orientation to life in Ann Arbor. The students are then taken on a walking tour of the University of Michigan campus and downtown Ann Arbor. Students are given help with shopping, opening bank accounts, and adjusting to the life and culture of the United States.

University Counseling - The MLC university counselor provides preliminary counseling to students who are interested in attending American universities. Students who need additional assistance in selecting or applying to a university are charged for each advising session. Editing assistance is also available at a nominal fee. Conditional Letters of Acceptance - A number of universities and colleges cooperate with the MLC by issuing conditional letters of acceptance to academically acceptable MLC students prior to the students achieving an acceptable TOEFL score or MELAB score. For more information and forms click here.

TOEFL Preparation - All MLC courses are designed to raise the student's TOEFL score. At the Advanced Intermediate and the Advanced levels, a student may attend a TOEFL review course.

GMAT Preparation/ Business English - At the advanced level, a student may elect to attend the GMAT Preparation Course or Business English. The two classes are not offered the same term but in alternate terms. GMAT Preparation is offered Fall I, Winter I, and Spring Terms. Business English is offered Fall II, Winter II, Summer I, and Summer II Terms.

Social Events - The MLC arranges varied social events each term for its students.

E-Mail/ Internet - The MLC offers free e-mail and internet access to its students.

Community Involvement - Students are informed of the many community and university events at weekly information sessions.

Conversation Partners - MLC students may sign up to meet with American university students and members of the Ann Arbor community for additional conversation practice.

Special Seminars - Each term, two of the following special seminars are offered to MLC students at no additional cost:

  • American Culture & Conversation Practice - Through American television, radio and print media, students learn about and discuss American culture.
  • Pronunciation & Conversation Practice - MLC students are given additional help with pronunciation difficulties and meet for extra conversation practice.
  • Vocabulary Development - MLC students are provided with vocabulary learning strategies and an opportunity to develop their passive and active vocabularies .
  • TOEFL Seminar - MLC students are given additional practice to improve their TOEFL test taking strategies.
