MLC students who are interested in attending an American university or college are assisted by the academic counselor at the Michigan Language Center. The academic counselor meets with the students individually to help them decide which universities or colleges best meet their needs. He provides the students with information about the programs offered by the institution, its reputation, the costs, the application standards and requirements, the geographic location, and the student life. He then assists the students with the application procedure.

The academic counselor not only helps students learn about Michigan's rich educational resources, he also assists students in applying to programs, colleges, and universities in other parts of the country. Some students are interested in familiarizing themselves with other parts of the United States or they wish to attend a particular program in another state. There is no charge for the university placement service that the Michigan Language Center provides its students. The MLC prides itself in satisfactorily placing each qualified student. Editing of applications is available at a nominal charge.

MLC students are fortunate that the Ann Arbor area offers many different educational oppotunitites. This gives them the opportunity to choose a university that is most suitable to their needs and abilities. The community college and state university system in Michigan is excellent. It offers MLC students a great number and variety of colleges and universities of all sizes, levels of competition, interest and cost.

The MLC is adjacent to the very famous and prestigious University of Michigan. Of course, attendance at the University of Michigan is very competitive. For highly qualified students, it is a great opportunity to be educated at a world class university.

Ann Arbor's Washtenaw Community College (WCC) offers a great opportunity for students to fulfill their academic requirements for the first two years of university study in a less competitive environment. In addition, WCC is less expensive than most four-year universities. Students who successfully complete two years of study at WCC have no difficulty transferring to a four-year university. There are also students at WCC who have already completed undergraduate programs in their own countries and decide to attend WCC for four months to a year in order to have academic experiences in English or for their personal enrichment. Some of these students begin attending WCC while they are still attending the Michigan Language Center. WCC offers a qualified MLC student a conditional letter of acceptance.

In nearby Ypsilanti, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) offers a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs. Some international students choose to study for second undergraduate degrees at EMU, other students transfer credits from their home country universities and other students attend graduate degree programs at EMU. Students who receive undergraduate degrees at Eastern Michigan University often continue their graduate academic studies at the University of Michigan. EMU is the most popular university for MLC students to attend because of the quality of education at EMU as well as its location. Many students continue to live in Ann Arbor while attending EMU. EMU offers a qualified MLC student a conditional letter of acceptance.
