UNIVERSITY PREPARATORY ENGLISH AND STUDY SKILLS PROGRAM (UPESS) Preparation for Attending an American University or College 3 Week Program Course Dates: July 29 to September 5, 2008 Arrival: Sunday, July 27, 2008 Departure: Saturday, September 6, 2008 Registration: Monday, July 28, 2008 Orientation: Tuesday July 29, 2008 Tuition Cost: $850.00 The Michigan Language Center will be offering a special academic English language program for students who will be entering the University of Michigan and other U.S. universities and colleges in September, 2007. This program will work to improve the student's academic study skills, listening comprehension, speaking and oral fluency, writing skills, note-taking skills and overall English language competence. A minimum score of 500 on the paper-based TOEFL or 173 on the computer-based TOEFL is required. The program is specifically designed for students who already have a fairly high level of English language proficiency and will be attending an undergraduate or graduate academic program in the United States. A typical day in the three-week program will consist of four hours of class, two to three hours of homework, and an optional hour of lab work. The UPESS classes will meet in the afternoons which will enable the students to spend the mornings settling into their new living quarters, taking care of banking, registering for their academic courses and just generally acclimating themselves to their new environment. To register for the UPESS Program, an application and a $200.00 non-refundable deposit must be received no later than July 25, 2008. Space is limited and each applicant will be considered on the basis of the arrival date of his/her application and deposit. The remainder of the tuition, $650.00, will be due on the first day of the program. SPECIAL COMBINATION PROGRAM TERM 5B + UPESS SESSION 6 Week Program Course Dates: July 8 to August 15, 2008 Arrival: Sunday, July 6, 2008 Departure: Saturday, August 16, 2008 Registration: Monday, July 7,  2008 Orientation: Monday, July 7, 2008 Tuition Cost: $1400.00 Students who are able to come to the United States for a longer period of time may wish to attend the MLC's intensive English program in July before beginning the UPESS program. The additional three weeks of intensive English classes provides the students with a greater level of confidence in their language abilities. In Term 5B students may choose classes that focus on conversational English, academic English or business English. APPLICATION PROCESS: To register for the 3-Week UPESS Program or the 6-Week Combination Program of Term 5B + UPESS, a student should send the following: 1) A completed Application Form & Statement of Financial Guarantee. 2) A $200.00 non-refundable deposit or the completed Mastercard and Visa Charge Authorization Form.
