Application Process for Intensive English Program

The following is the application process for prospective students who would like to study in Michigan Language Center’s Intensive English Program:

Before the Application Process:

Please note that if MLC has to re-issue an I-20 for a later date, there is a non-refundable $50.00 re-issue fee for the student named on the I-20, and a non-refundable $25.00 re-issue fee for each dependent I-20.

MLC strongly recommends that students apply at least two months in advance to allow time to receive their Form I-20, make an appointment at the U.S. Consulate in their home country, and prepare travel plans to the U.S.

    Step 1: Apply

    Students will need to submit the online application form. On the application form, students will be asked to:

    • Select which Session they would like to study
    • Provide basic personal information
    • Upload a copy of their passport
    • Upload a copy of a bank statement or letter of financial guarantee, which states that the student has sufficient funds to study at MLC and live in the U.S. If the student is not the bank account holder, the bank account holder should complete the Affidavit of Financial Support and email it to
    • Pay the $100.00 nonrefundable application fee by credit card
    • Upload copies of passports for dependents, if the student will bring dependents (spouse, children) to the U.S. Please note there is a non-refundable $50.00 dependent fee for each dependent.

    Please make sure you have all these documents ready to upload before you begin the online application form. Acceptable file formats for the document uploads are: .jpg, .png, .pdf, .doc, .docx.

    Step 2: Review

    Once the online application form and supporting documents are submitted, MLC will review them.

    Once MLC has reviewed all proper documentation and received payment on Paypal, we will send the student an email stating that we have begun processing the Form I-20.them.

    If MLC has not received all proper documentation, we will send an email to the student requesting the missing information.

    Step 3: Processing

    Processing the Form I-20 for the student and any dependents can take up to two business days. Once processing has finished, MLC will contact the student and send the documents by one of the following options:

    Option 1: Regular Mail (Free):

    There is no charge for regular mail; however the MLC may recommend express mail depending on the student’s home country. There is also no tracking information provided with regular mail.

    Option 2: Express Mail (Price depends on student’s country):

    The student must inform MLC if they would like the documents sent by express mail, and the student will need to pay the express mail fee before we will send the documents. The fee varies from $50-125, based on student’s address in their home country. The express mail fee is non-refundable.

    Option 3: Office Pick-up (Free):

    The student must inform MLC if he/she is able to pick-up the documents in person. The office is open from Monday through Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm. IMPORTANT: the student must directly pick up the documents, and cannot ask a friend or family member to pick up on their behalf.

    Step 4: What To Do Next

    After the I-20 has been processed, MLC will email the student a PDF copy of their acceptance letter and the first page of the Form I-20. The student may read over the information and confirm everything is correct.

    MLC sends this information immediately by email so that students can make an appointment with the U.S. Consulate in their home country as quickly as possible. In the acceptance letter, students will find more information about when they need to report to the MLC and register for classes.
