Advanced Level Overview

Whether a student’s goals are to improve English for professional, academic, or real-world purposes, the Advanced Level classes help them to achieve these goals. 

In the Advanced Level, students will:
  • Further their knowledge and use English with increased complexity and fluency
  • Analyze the form, meaning, and use of high-level grammar structures, and continue to practice using grammar authentically
  • Develop and use more sophisticated vocabulary to express more complex ideas 
  • Build reading and listening fluency for real-world and academic material
  • Practice speaking English with better fluency and pronunciation
  • Sharpen writing skills by increasing writing speed, expressing sophisticated ideas, and applying a more advanced vocabulary
  • Complete written exercises and special projects
  • Take classes focused on specialized skills, such as Business English or test preparation skills for the TOEFL or IELTS exams
After completing the Advanced Level, students will be able to
  • Understand and use a wide range of English vocabulary and grammar to express detailed, complex ideas
  • Engage in English conversation authentically with greater fluency and pronunciation
  • Comprehend high-level reading and listening material about a range of specific real-world and academic topics
  • Write coherent essays with more complex vocabulary and sophisticated ideas

  • 6 hours per week – class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday
  • Study complex grammar structures and topics, learning form, meaning and use
  • Produce new grammar in communicative practice
  • Use grammar as a basis to improve all areas of English
  • Focus on using grammar to construct and understand complex sentence structure
  • Topics examples: All verb tenses, advanced rules for nouns, passive voice, and more
  • 6 hours per week – class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday
  • Strengthen formal essay writing and research skills
  • Summarize and paraphrase material and properly cite sources
  • Incorporate sophisticated and accurate vocabulary into essays
  • Focus on the writing process as a way to write accurately and well
  • Master complex sentence structures
  • Topics: High-level academic areas, current events and business news
  • 4 hours per week – class meets Tuesday and Thursday
  • Develop high-level communication skills for academic and professional use
  • Listen to authentic material, including longer lectures and presentations
  • Fine-tune pronunciation
  • Learn note-taking skills
  • Expand vocabulary
  • Prepare and perform speeches and presentations
  • 4 hours per week – class meets Tuesday and Thursday
  • Read lengthy academic and authentic passages covering a variety of topics
  • Focus on increasing reading speed by fine-tuning reading skills
  • Analyze texts to identify author’s style and intent
  • Broaden vocabulary through theme-based discussions and practice
  • Practice paraphrasing and summarizing information
  • Present on information gained through challenging reading
  • 6 hours per week – class meets Monday/Wednesdy/Friday
  • Develop listening skills for conversations and lectures, such as effective note-taking as well as answering main idea and detail questions
  • Learn skills for reading tests, such as getting meaning from context, scanning for detail, paraphrasing, and more
  • Learn how to successfully respond to a variety of writing tasks from English tests, such as writing an email, synthesizing information, summarizing, as well as expressing and supporting an opinion
  • Sharpen their speaking skills in order to perform well on English test speaking tasks such as stating and supporting an opinion, recording a dictation, answering interview questions, summarizing information from multiple sources, and more
  • Classes will meet 2 hours on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (4 hours/week)
  • This class will focus on high-level pronunciation and business skills such as cross-cultural communication, speaking in meetings, and small talk/networking.

Sample topics include:

  • Determine and use appropriate English word stress, vowel length, rhythm, thought groups, and focus words
  • Communicate using direct/explicit communication
  • Recognize indirect speech when receiving negative feedback.Use indirect speech when giving feedback & making requests
  • Identify appropriate small talk topics
  • Understand and use common idioms & metaphors when networking and socializing
