When students register for the first time at MLC, they must read and sign the MLC Enrollment Agreement below
All students must maintain a minimum of 80% attendance. If a student is 5 minutes late for a class, he or she will be counted as late. If a student leaves more than 5 minutes early, he or she will be marked as early departure. A total of 4 late arrivals/early departures counts as 1 absence. Please see the Attendance Policy in the MLC Student Handbook for more details.
Satisfactory Academic Progress
Students must complete coursework and pass exams in order to maintain satisfactory academic progress in the program. Students must meet the quantitative minimum standard of 80% attendance in the session and maintain a minimum grade of 70% to be in good academic standing. To advance to the next level, a student must earn 80% in a complete level (Levels 1 and 2 = 2 sessions; Levels 3, 4, 5 = 3 sessions). Please see the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy in the MLC Student Handbook for more details.
Students must purchase the required textbooks for their classes for each session. Students must have their books on the first day of class, and they must bring their textbooks to class every day. The cost of books ranges from $100 to $175 each session.
Maintaining Student Status
An international student admitted to the United States as an F-1 student must meet certain obligations in order to maintain visa status. Under current regulations, the student must:
A. Have a passport that is kept valid at all times.
B. Attend the school he or she is authorized to attend.
C. Pursue a full course of study and make normal progress towards the completion of the course of study. Full time English study is defined as 20 hours of class per week. See the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy in the MLC Student Handbook for more details.
Exit Exam and Exit Interview
At the end of your program, you will be required to take an exit exam to measure your English proficiency level. After the exam, you will meet with a director for an exit interview.
Students are required to pay all costs by the first day of class. The Michigan Language Center does not accept payment in installments.
Intensive English Program
The tuition and registration cost of the first session of study in the intensive English program is $1350.00. There is a $100 discount for continuing students who pre-register for the 5-Week Intensive English Language program in the next session. To receive the discount, the student must:
1. Pay the $100.00 non-refundable registration fee on the day of pre-registration.
2. Select his/her classes on the day of pre-registration.
3. Pay the remaining tuition balance by the 1st day of class.
A student who has registered for multiple sessions before coming to the U.S.A. will receive his/her discount after registering and selecting classes for the continuing session.
If a student wishes to change class/program after the session has started, the student must meet with the Director. A student may not change class/program after the 5th day of the session.
Cancellation and Refund Policy (2-2-2019)
CANCELLATION PRIOR TO START OF CLASS OR NO SHOW
If a student notifies the MLC of cancellation prior to the start of class, or if a student never attends class (no show), he/she will receive a refund for the full tuition balance that was paid. The $100 non-refundable application and registration fee will not be refunded.
REJECTION OF APPLICANT
If an applicant is rejected for enrollment by the MLC or if his/her visa application is rejected, he/she will receive a refund for the full tuition balance that was paid. The $100 non-refundable application and registration fee will not be refunded.
If the MLC cancels a program subsequent to a student’s enrollment, the MLC will refund all monies paid by the student.
WITHDRAWAL OR TERMINATION AFTER PROGRAM/CLASS START DATE
WITHDRAWAL: INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM / PART-TIME CLASSES
A student who provides verbal or written notification of withdrawal to the MLC is eligible for a refund if his/her last date of attendance (LDA) is on or before the midpoint (50%) of the program/class for that session. If a student is administratively withdrawn from the program/class, the student is eligible for a refund without verbal or written notification. See Refund & Charges below. If the student’s last date of attendance (LDA) is after the midpoint (50%) of the program/class for that session, there is no refund for that session.
WITHDRAWAL: 3-WEEK ENROLLMENT
- If a student enrolls in his/her first session in the Intensive English Program for a period of 3 weeks and then withdraws, there is no refund.
- A continuing student who enrolls in a subsequent session for a period of 3 weeks is eligible for a refund if his/her last date of attendance (LDA) is on or before the midpoint (50%) of the 3-week enrollment period. See Refund & Charges below. If the student’s last date of attendance (LDA) is after the midpoint (50%) of the 3-week enrollment period, there is no refund for that 3-week enrollment period.
A student who is terminated due to the student’s failure to adhere to the MLC’s attendance, conduct, or student progress policy is eligible for a refund as of his/her last date of attendance if that date is on or before the midpoint (50%) of the program/class for that session. See Refund & Charges below.
REFUNDS & CHARGES
When processing a refund for withdrawal or termination after program/class start date, the refund is based on the student’s start date of enrollment for that session and the student’s last date of attendance. The MLC retains the following charges:
- The $100 non-refundable application and registration fee.
- The pro-rated tuition amount for the number of class days enrolled, up to and including the last date of attendance. The pro-rated tuition amount is the tuition balance (tuition minus the $100 non-refundable registration/application fee) divided by the total number of class days for the particular program/class that the student is enrolled in for that session.
REFUND OF FUTURE SESSIONS
One session is the minimum period of financial obligation. Students who pay for future sessions are eligible for a full refund for all future sessions.
Refunds will be paid within 30 calendar days from the documented date of determination. The date of determination is the date the student gives written or verbal notice of withdrawal to the MLC, the date the MLC administratively withdraws the student, or the date the MLC terminates the student due to the student’s failure to adhere to the MLC’s attendance, conduct, or student progress policy.
If an agency has arranged a student’s enrollment and paid the student’s tuition, the refund will be made to the agency.
In extremely rare cases of inclement weather or an unforeseen emergency, the MLC may need to cancel classes. If this happens, the MLC will notify students immediately by text and/or email, and instructors will correspond with students regarding coursework and assignments.
