Groundhog Day – American Holiday

If you study English in Michigan, you know that winter can be cold and snowy.  By February, many people are waiting for the warmer weather of spring to arrive.  But when exactly will it start getting warm again?  Enter the groundhog.

Groundhog Day is an American tradition that takes place on February 2nd in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.  The ceremony begins when a groundhog (known as Punxsutawney Phil) emerges from his burrow in the ground.  If Phil sees his shadow due to clear weather, he will hurry back to his den and winter will persist for six more weeks.  On the other hand, if Phil does not see his shadow due to cloudy weather, spring will arrive early.

So if you want to know if the cold will end early this year, find out today whether Phil saw his shadow or not.   And if you want to experience this American tradition, along with many others, consider studying English at Michigan Language Center!
