Meet our students! Viktoriia, from Ukraine, arrived in the US and has lived in Ann Arbor since February 2021 for her husband’s business. She has been studying Psychology online and will graduate from the University of Ukraine next year. As the war occured in February 2022, Viktoriia started to use her skills to help the people of Ukraine. She built a website to send money to people who are in need, and set up multiple online meetings to talk with Ukrainian women who are in unimaginable circumstances, so that they would be able to relieve their pain and anxiety.
“I have been interested in psychology and I want to pursue this field,” Viktoriia said. “I was very shocked when I heard the news about the war, but psychology helped me a lot to keep myself calm and do something to help others.”
Even though she knew only a few English words when she came to the US, she improved her language skills significantly within just a year. She made many friends at MLC and hosted a workshop to let the MLC students know about what was happening in Ukraine. This workshop was very meaningful for MLC students to learn about the situation in the country and what we could do to help.
Viktoriia said she immediately liked the city of Ann Arbor and felt very comfortable learning at MLC. She emphasized the MLC instructors are amazing and professional. “I learned from instructor Kerri when I started the beginner’s class at MLC, and she is so amazing and supportive. Because I didn’t know any English words at first, she also used body language so that I could follow her. Also, Julie, Josh, and Alexandra are wonderful teachers too. All the instructors and staff are very kind and supportive.”
Now Viktoriia takes All Skills & Grammar, Writing, and Professional English Class. “Keeping up with the class is hard, but I love studying here. Now I have very good friends at MLC and I have just invited my friends to my house and I cooked Ukrainian dishes for them!”
Viktoriia is a highly motivated student who is interested in enhancing her language skills to enjoy life in the US with her family and to work in the US in the future. We’re also very happy to have you in the MLC community, Viktoriia!
